JANUARY 2026 at the SALON

Europe and the EU, frayed and fractured over the years, has found in unifying force in Donald Trump.  Our president's latest threats toward Greenland have brought condemnation from across the continent.

Of course, diplomacy is never so simple. Crises both internal (migration, economy) and external (Ukraine, Gaza)  result in decisive moves at times, and just as often tentative movement or inaction.  So what's going on inside the EU?

External Action: at the Heart of European Diplomacy is a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how the EU navigates an increasingly chaotic geopolitical landscape. The film follows the EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell through real-time crises, revealing how global policy actually gets made.

The documentary, directed by Borrell's Spanish countryman Albert Solé, kicks off this year's EU Film Festival, playing at the Harris Theater and on the Pitt campus. To be followed by a roundtable discussion. Salon members are invited to The Porch across the street for a bite.
