A MOTHER APART
“My mother’s leaving me was the first wound.”
A MOTHER APART is a radical re-imagining of family and motherhood, chronicling the international quest of award-winning Jamaican poet, author, and performance artist Staceyann Chin to find and forge a healing relationship with the mother who abandoned her in her youth.
An unflinching travelog exploring a creative life and bittersweet memories, the film follows Staceyann’s decades-long odyssey from Brooklyn to Jamaica, Canada, and Europe. Her search is for reconciliation with a distant mother while raising her own young daughter with love, respect, and wisdom. It is a gripping story of a brave journey leading Staceyann to a new definition of home.
Discussion and refreshments to follow. Immediately after, Doc Salon members and friends are invited to stay awhile for our own talk about the film!
