OCTOBER 2024 at the SALON

It's a two-parter this month:  a one-night only special screening at the Harris Theater, and a talk by the filmmaker the next morning. Go to one or both!

What happened when filmmaker Aki Kaurismaki (Fallen Leaves) went to a remote Finnish town to convert an old foundry into a new movie theater? Veljko Vidal's chronicle is an imaginative docu-comedy, a meditation on the nature of cinema, and a loving portrait of a small-town community.

Veljko is traveling in the US with the film, and will be present. Cinema Laika is followed by Kaurismaki's 1988 comic crime film Ariel.

Thursday, October 10  7:30p
Harris Theater, Downtown
$15 regular admission; $8 for Doc Salon members

What is a Movie Theater, and What Can It Offer People?

Veljko is sitting down for coffee to talk about the film and what he learned about how movie theaters can contribute to social cohesion. He'll show plenty of excerpts from the film (so if you missed it, no worries) and discuss how he used elements of fiction to build a funny, unique documentary. He'll also share some stories from the construction site about working with the master Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismaki.
