OCTOBER 2022 at the SALON

“The old American dream just seems to be gone,” says Walt Hill of Local 1196 in Brackenridge, just up the Allegheny from Pittsburgh.

In March 2021, the steelworkers of USW 1196 went on strike against ATI, the Dallas-based corporation that owns the local steel mill.  From late night conversations on the picket lines, to fiery debates at the union hall, to the homes of the members, Local 1196 takes the viewer on the ground during a steelworkers strike.  As days on strike turn to weeks, and weeks to months, union leaders realize they’re playing with a short stack. Will they be able to stick together?

As Walt puts it in the film, “I think that this fight shows that, at least here, we’re fighting back.”

Visiting filmmaker Samuel George works for the Bertelsmann Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank in Washington DC. His 16 films to date have focused on the global intersection of politics, economics, social issues and daily life with locations in Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Latvia, Turkey, Mozambique, Italy, India and the U.S.
