KEEP QUIET OR DIE
As the bonus June event, the Documentary Salon joins with City of Asylum's presentation of Keep Quiet or Die: The Struggle for Democratic Change in the Congo, by visiting filmmaker Aunel Arneth. Arneth is a Resident Artist at City of Asylum, living in exile from his native Republic of The Congo (aka Congo-Brazzaville).
General Denis Sassou Nguesso serve as President of the Republic of Congo from 1979 to 1992, and was elected again to the presidency in 1997. He was still in power when, in 2015, he changed the constitution to enable his running for another term. Keep Quiet chronicles the struggle of journalists and pro-democracy advocates in their fight against the constitutional change and in favor of democracy in the Republic of Congo.
Sassou Nguesso remains in power today. Following the release of this film, filmmaker Aunel Arneth was persecuted in the Republic of Congo and Senegal. As a result, he went into exile in the United States where he is currently a visiting scholar at the Global Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh and sponsored by the Artist Protection Fund (APF).
The program includes screening of the film and audience discussion with Mr. Arneth.
Running time: 56 minutes, followed by 30 minute discussion.
Monday, June 27 7:00p
This is a free event, but you must register ahead of time, at the City of Asylum event page.
