DECEMBER 2021 at the SALON

One Shot     a work-in-progress at our new home
Salon member Haitham Alrikaby is at the rough cut stage of his feature-length documentary One Shot.  He needs your feedback on how to bring it to completion.
From the filmmaker:
Last winter, the pandemic nearly emptied the streets, except for a group of people who already lived there. The homeless seemed not to care about COVID, and I wondered if they might outlive us all. They live by a different set of rules, and can survive conditions most of us could not.

I befriended a group of homeless men on the North Side, and followed them with my camera for 5 months.  During that time, I discovered they’re a lot like me:  most of them have kids, and have parents willing to take care of them.  What separates us is drugs.  They often spend $100 a day to feed their addiction—enough to pay for comfortable housing.  Yet the drug market, which my film exposes, keeps them panhandling at intersections and sleeping under Pittsburgh’s famed bridges.

This will be the first event at the Documentary Salon's new screening home, The Hillman Conference Room at WQED-TV.  It's a spacious room that can accommodate social distancing for up to 20 people.

Don't come empty-handed!  Either bring something to eat, or cash or a checkbook: we'll be making a group donation to Operation Safety Net, a comprehensive program helping people experiencing homelessness in Pittsburgh.
