Hi Folks,
There will be no April Documentary Salon.
You may be desperately in need of a haircut, but you need not be in need of entertainment. Staying within the Salon’s bounds, here’s a list of outlets where you can stream FREE documentaries:
1. Let's start at home with Salon member Jon Lefkowitz' new profile of legendary Hollywood editor Walter Murch (Apocalype Now, The Conversation). Jon has made it free to watch HERE.
2. HBO is making a number of their original documentaries free on their HBO GO app in April.
3. VUDU is by subscription, but you can watch free movies if you don't mind a few ads. They have an impressive list of documentaries.
4. Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has two delivery routes for streaming video: Hoopla, and Libby:
* Hoopla has 2,694 documentaries.
* Libby (and OverDrive) is great for classic and recent PBS fare and the like.
You'll need a library card for both of these; Libby is an app, downloadable to your mobile device. OverDrive is for computers and Kindle.
5. DER (Documentary Educational Resources) is streaming a selection of documentaries from their vast, ethnography-oriented collection.
6. Then there's Archive.org’s Moving Image Archive. At the risk of getting lost in the cultural history of the last 100 years, have some fun exploring this collection of films, TV broadcasts, commercials, home movies, and art.
If you know of any other free sites with good docs, share them to the Pittsburgh Documentary Salon Facebook group.
Enjoy, until we meet again. Don't forget to get some fresh air, too!
