Berlin-based American filmmaker RICK MINNICH has been making documentaries on both continents for 20 years.  His films have screened on every continent except Antarctica, and have won numerous awards.  He is the Fall 2017 Visiting Documentary Filmmaker at Robert Morris University.  On November 10, Rick presents a two-part event at Pittsburgh Filmmakers:
AFTERNOON WORKSHOP:  
Rick gives a practical, non-techie session on documentary cinematography. Among the topics are:
  • Shooting without a Script:  How to get great observational material
  • Light:  Existing sources and supplementing with your own
  • Shooting solo vs. the Director-DP partnership

EVENING SCREENING:  
Two darkly comic films by Minnich about contemporary Germany that harken to its recent past: 
  • THE BOMB HUNTERS (52 min), about Oranienburg, a German city plagued with unexploded bombs from World War II.
  • THE BOOK OF LENINS (24 min), about the filmmaker's attempt to make a coffee table book about the last remaining statues of Lenin. Rick will talk about these films and about his adventures making films across multiple continents.
